Faith in the Media – Keynote: Interfaith week 2015

Muslim Women of Merton’s Debut Event – Organised by MWM in close co-operation with Merton Council’s Faith and Belief Forum

On Tuesday 19th November a chamber full of councillors, faith leaders, local media and community members came together at a keynote event chaired by Ged Curran Chief Executive of Merton Council to discuss the representation of faith in the media and its impact on community cohesion.

Speakers included Rabbi Helen Freeman from West London Synagogue who spoke about antisemitism past and present, drawing parallels with modern day representations of minorities and faith groups.  Imam Bilal Patel from Morden Islamic Community Centre who spoke about media imbalances in reporting and the damaging impact of one headline on the vast amounts of community work that happens day to day.  Dr. Emma Wiley of Muslim Women of Merton spoke about shared values between Muslims and wider society including family values, environmental concerns, human rights and education and accomplishments of muslims past and present.
